French Onion Grilled Cheese

Indulge in a comforting French Onion Grilled Cheese sandwich, featuring rich, caramelized onions and gooey Gruyère cheese sandwiched between crispy bread.

  • 2 large yellow or sweet onions
  • 4 slices of sourdough or crusty bread
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions by slicing them thinly.
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the onions and a sprinkle of salt. Stir occasionally and cook for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Assemble the sandwich by spreading butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  5. Layer caramelized onions and shredded Gruyère cheese on the non-buttered side, then top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.
  6. Grill the sandwich in a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Serve the sandwich sliced in half and enjoy!
