Haunted House Cookies

Delightfully spooky cookies decorated to resemble haunted houses, perfect for Halloween fun with family and friends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 egg whites (for royal icing) or milk (for glaze)
  • Food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • Various candies and sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sugar Cookie Dough: Beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, vanilla, and dry ingredients. Chill in the fridge for about an hour.
  2. Roll & Cut the Dough: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll the chilled dough to about ¼ inch thickness and cut into shapes using cookie cutters.
  3. Bake the Cookies: Bake cut-out cookies for 8-10 minutes, until pale with a slight golden edge. Cool completely before decorating.
  4. Make the Icing: Beat egg whites and powdered sugar for royal icing, or mix powdered sugar with milk for glaze. Add food coloring as desired.
  5. Decorate the Cookies: Use piping bags to outline and decorate your cookies with icing and candies for spooky effects.
  6. Let the Icing Set: Allow the decorated cookies to dry completely, either in a cool place or using a fan.

Notes

Store decorated cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For a vegan option, use aquafaba instead of egg whites in the icing.
