Potatoes Au Gratin

A classic dish of creamy, cheesy potatoes that brings comfort and elegance to any meal.

  • 2 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (e.g., Gruyère or Cheddar)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing the baking dish)
  • Extra cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the potatoes by peeling and thinly slicing them to about 1/8 inch thick.
  3. Whisk together the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
  4. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter and layer the sliced potatoes with cheese in the dish.
  5. Bake covered with foil for 45 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Let the dish sit for about 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Feel free to add fresh herbs, bacon, or vegetables for variations. This dish can also be prepared a day in advance.
