Candied Beets

A sweet and savory dish that transforms humble beets into a delightful treat, perfect as a side dish or salad addition.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 35 medium beets (cooked, peeled and cut into 2″ pieces)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Beets: Start with your cooked beets. If you’ve got fresh ones, wash them well, boil until tender, then peel and chop them into 2″ pieces.
  2. Melt the Butter: In a medium skillet over medium heat, add the unsalted butter. Let it melt completely and bubble lightly.
  3. Add Brown Sugar: Stir in the brown sugar and let it dissolve into the melted butter, creating a lovely caramel sauce.
  4. Combine the Beets: Gently add your prepared beets into the skillet and toss them in the buttery brown sugar mixture until they’re well-coated.
  5. Season It Up: Sprinkle in the salt and gently mix. Simmer the beets for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Finish with Orange Zest: Just before serving, stir in the orange zest.
  7. Serve Warm: Transfer them to a serving dish, and spoon the luscious sauce over the top.

Notes

For added flavor, try using fresh zest rather than bottled. Candied beets pair beautifully with roasted meats and salads.
